What is a Mala? How to use malas for japa meditation, their types, and their spiritual benefits.

What is Mala?

In Sanskrit, the word mālā means a garland, wreath, or string of beads. Traditionally, people use malas to enhance focus during mantra japa (chanting sacred words) and meditation.

A mālā is usually made from seeds like rudraksha, lotus, or tulsi, or sometimes from gemstones. Mālā beads can be worn as necklaces or bracelets. A necklace mālā typically has 108 beads plus one guru bead, while bracelet mālās usually have 27 or 54 beads plus a guru bead. The guru bead is a marker for the start and end of mantra chanting.

Why Does a Mala Have 108 Beads?

The number 108 holds great spiritual significance in Indian traditions. Here’s why:

  • Energy Channels (Nadis): It is believed that 108 subtle energy channels (nādis) meet at the heart chakra.
  • Ayurveda: There are 108 marma points (vital energy points) in the body.
  • Astronomy: The diameter of the Sun is about 108 times that of the Earth. The distance from Earth to the Moon is roughly 108 times the Moon’s diameter.
  • Astrology: There are 9 planets and 12 houses (9 x 12 = 108). Also, there are 27 constellations and 4 directions (27 x 4 = 108).
  • Mathematics:
  • 108 is the sum of the first nine multiples of 3.
  • 108 = 1×1 × 2×2 × 3×3.
  • 108 sits between 107 and 109, which are twin primes.
  • 108 is a harshad number (divisible by the sum of its digits). In Sanskrit, harshad means “great joy”.

How to Use a Mala

Hold the mālā in your preferred hand, draped over your ring finger. Start at the guru bead, and use your thumb to move one bead at a time while chanting your mantra. After completing the circle, you’ll return to the guru bead. Pause, turn the mālā around, and start the next round.
